Clean-up bugs have been covertly deployed, and water tests confirm that the spillage is clearing up. The team will trigger the suicide genes in the bugs in a few days.
Sadly, it looks like the bugs will outlive the sick tripeds. The flotilla landed on their island this morning, and the other tripeds have started slaughtering the sick ones. The flotilla 'peds appear somewhat confused by the state of affairs, and we think that some infighting has started. The surviving sick tripeds have fled into the forests and are being hunted down.
The camera footage is available, but I'd recommend those of you with weak stomachs not access it.
In brighter news, the survey team assigned to examine the ruins of the larger triped city on the coast has sent back some preliminary data. It looks like the tripeds had a considerably higher level of culture in the past - they've found large stone buildings, evidence of more advanced metalworking, trade and so forth. They've identified several areas of interest, and want consensus on where to focus their efforts.
The tripeds don't seem to have much of a written culture, but we may be able to derive a translation program for their inscriptions. There's also a set of vaults under the city that appear to have been deliberately and hastily sealed, roughly around the time the city was abandoned.
Of less immediate interest are the major civic structures in the centre of the city, the outlying wooden huts and dwellings, or the remains of the docks.
