Sensors detect a weak energy signature from the probe, and the shuttle drops down to land on the icy shore. The probe's somewhere under the water. One security trooper approaches the lake...
...and the lake erupts! Things burst to the surface - weird conglomerations of dozens of greyish spheres, rippling and wriggling like living rubber, covered in silvery slime. There are at least twenty of the objects or creatures or whatever they are, and the smallest is nearly four metres long. The biggest, floating in the middle of the lake, is nearly ten metres long. Some emerge from the lake and roll along the shore, their largest spheres serving as wheels and somehow rotating freely.
One of the things emerges from the lake and starts rolling south again. In the centre of the thing's mass is a weirdly distended sac, not spherical like the rest, but bulging with the unmistakable outlike of the missing probe. It scrambles frantically over the rocks while the larger entities move closer to the shuttle and the recovery team...
