We just rolled up characters for the second Traveller playtest game. The group includes one old-school Traveller fan and one multiclassed economist/physicist, so it's a harder test environment than the 'fluffier' Firefly group.
Sir Jaffa Revels: a former secret agent, he met Flandry when undercover on board a naval ship. The spy helped Flandry foil a mutiny, then become involved in an as-yet-undetermined Big Secret Plot involving high-level government officials. As a result of that plot, Revels became a diplomat, but an attempted assassination cut short his career there.
He then became involved in organised crime, rising through the criminal ranks and ending up with rather a lot of cash.

Baron Captain Dr Dominic Flandry, a career naval officer, Flandry rose to prominence after foiling a mutiny with the aid of an imperial spy. His steady ascent through the ranks was aided by various contacts of his, including a senior figure in the admiralty who took an interest in Flandry early on, and a noblewoman with which the captain has an 'understanding'. The captain possesses a piece of alien technology of indeterminate purpose, and picked up a basic understanding of survival skills after being stranded for several months after a misjump.

Meanwhile, Mick Gleeson's life took a very different turn. He was a married broker in a spaceport, but a string of bad deals drove him to a life of crime. After the birth of his first child, he went straight again, rapidly ascending the corporate ladder. A friend of his from the shadier side of the spaceport, Orin Clark, was the child's godfather.
Gleeson's first company went bankrupt in suspicious circumstances, and rumours circulated about the banker's competence and personal ethics. Many whispered he had something of a drinking problem. Now, his second corporation has taken him into space, away from his wife and former business associates. He has hired Clark as the ship's pilot.

Orin Clark started off in the Scouts, but was forced out by an ambitious rival. He tried his hand at piracy, but was caught early on by a naval patrol, and given the choice between prison and the pressgang, he chose the Navy. From there, he went into business as a trader, and it was there he found his niche. He knows Gleeson from his days as a trader, but the death of Gleeson's child (and Clark's godchild) has driven something of a wedge between them.
