My laptop crashed this morning (possibly related to this problem). I was able to get all my active work files off it, which is a very good thing as I've two deadlines this weekend. Through random flailings with XP cds and boot settings, I've managed to get it working again,---

---and ironically, just as I was writing an entry about the horrible uncertainty of working with a machine that might die again at any moment, it's hung again. I've restored this draft on another laptop, but I can't fix my own machine so easily.

Hmm. Reboot, copy as much stuff as I can off, and see what can be done.
