Julius Cromwell (Chris) came from an asteroid colony. He joined the Alliance scouts to get out to the Rim, serving two terms there. He rescued Jorge Gonzalez from his as-yet-undefined mysterious event, and made contact with Annata Seiryu when he visited her world. When the war of Independence started, he and Jorge attempted to join the Browncoats, but before he could sign up, Julius was drafted back into the scouting service. He crashed his ship (possibly deliberately) and was picked up by Quaid Rayne. The two made their way to Annata's world just in time for the coup...

One rule I'm fiddling with is allowing players to get extra skills by tying background events into other player characters. For example, Chris rolled a new contact for his event in his second term in the Scouts, so by declaring that that contact was Annata instead of an NPC, he was able to get a free skill roll for both characters. I need to work out when to cap this benefit.
The rather high stats for all the characters are nothing to do with any new rules...just ludicrously good rolling.
Jorge Gonzalez (Steve) also left the Core Worlds looking for adventure in the Scouts. He explored the fringes of the system, running into [Something as yet undefined], and was rescued by Julius Cromwell. He contined with the Scouts until the war started, then joined the Browncoats as a marine. He fought on Annata's as-yet-unnamed world until the coup...

That's a lot of rank 0 skills. Currently, you get all your Service Skills at Rank 0 as part of the basic training the first time you take a career, plus a few skills based on your homeworld. That may get cut down later on.
Quaid Rayne (Denis) started life on a hydrogen harvesting habitat in the upper atmosphere of a gas giant. Bored with life there, he joined a gang of pirates, but his first job went wrong, costing Quaid his left foot when his vacc suit was torn in a raid. He was kicked out of the gang and wandered from job to job. While working on another station, he was responsible for the death of several crewmates in an accident, earning himself a repuation as an albatross.
Wandering once more, he ran into Julius Cromwell, who was technically trapped behind enemy lines, and the pair made their way to Annata's world.

Two failed survival rolls meant two rolls on the Mishap table. The first one was actually the worst possible result, and could easily have resulted in poor Quaid becoming a non-viable character. It's currently possible to wish you were dead in RTT - if you get injured, the cost of your medical bills can stack up. It works just like the ship repayments, only it's on your organs... fortunately, Quaid only lost a foot, and is happy enough to wander around with a peg leg.
Annata Seiryu (Claire) was the ruler of a moderately rich world on the border between the old Core Planets and the fringe worlds. Married at a young age, she ruled over her homeworld for nearly ten years before the war tore it apart. She was sympathetic to the Independants, but her husband was secretly involved with the Alliance. He betrayed the Browncoat forces on her world, leading to their defeat. Annata fled the planet on board her yacht along with the other characters...

I was faintly worried about how to get Claire's character into space, given she was happily ruling her planet for all three terms, and had rolled an 'Improved Relationship' life event meaning she was married in her first term. Then she got to convert her husband into an enemy and rolled a Yacht on her benefits table, both of which fit very nicely indeed.
Given that this morning, I only had the Navy career done, I was quite happy to be able to knock together another nine career paths together in an afternoon. Things are still a bit wobbly, but for a first outing, I was happy enough with how character generation went. The conversion from the Traveller universe to Firefly was remarkably smooth, although I can't think of an equivalent to the TAS for the 'Verse, and I'm not sure whether or not I should allow Chris to spend all his starting cash on that PGMP...
