The second lift shaft was fitted with an experimental spiral escalator, constructed by the by the Reno Company of America, which ran around its circumference. Two separate spirals were employed - one up and one down. Little else is known about this escalator except that it was a spectacular failure - it is believed that it was only used for a day or so - if at all by the general public. Nobody today is quite sure how it was supposed to work...

So...a moving metal double-helix buried under London, and covered-up after use? I smell Mythos...
