Still Alive

I have a billion things to post - Traveller stuff, Conpulsion report, thoughts on gaming, thoughts on other stuff, Now We Are Here - but no time.

Therefore, you get an lj feed of Buttersafe instead.

Real content coming soon, I swear.

I am officially old

Walk down to the midnight opening of GAME to pick up Halo3.
See a very very long queue.
Take a long walk around the city centre.
Return twenty minutes later to see that the queue has hardly moved an inch.
Think "bugger this, I'll just pick it up tomorrow morning instead" and go home.

Rambling and lengthy notes

I am in Heathrow. I will be here for another seven hours or so, because I went for the cheapest flight back to Cork, which does not leave until half ten or something. I shall fill the intervening time by writing about zombies and reading space opera.

I have time for a lengthy blog entry because the stupid internet-voucher machine only gives £10 vouchers, turning a quick checking of email into a lengthy wander around the intertubes. Curse it.

Hmm. This computer is trying to kick me off. More later.

Quick Notes II

* NIN were good.
* Foo Fighters were absolutely staggeringly awesome. Best concert I've ever been too in terms of getting the crowd involved and enthused.
* I am now somewhat broken.
* The Lost Fleet: Dauntless, the first book of the giant pile of sci-fi books I grabbed to get me into a Traveller mindset was absolutely dire.
* Off to London tomorrow afternoon. Somehow need to stay on top of the RuneQuest book I'm writing, the Traveller design, and other stuff.

Quick Notes

* I need to blog last week's JANUS game. And, after tonight, this week's JANUS game.
* JANUS is going on hold so I can run a Traveller playtest game.
* As is, probably, my SotC game.
* Which means I need to get a workable draft of chargen done sharpish.
* I have, unexpectedly, an XBox360.
* Gears of War is really good.
* I saw The Bourne Ultimatum this week, and now I really must see the other two Bourne movies. It was excellent.
* This week, I'll be in Dublin Wednesday/Thursday for the NIN/Foo Fighters
* Then off to London Friday/Saturday/Sunday.
* I really need to write up an entry on Mongoose, Traveller, and what I want to do with the corebook, but that'll have to wait until I have more time.

Weekend Update

I'm back from Edinburgh. Read more... )

I also picked up Pendragon and The Great Pendragon Campaign, which I may run at some point. Y'know, when I've got a spare lifetime.

Charity begins at home.

After having dragged an awful lot of old sci-fi and fantasy books from my old bedroom to every charity shop and second-hand store in town, I'm just not entirely sure charity actually _ends_ anywhere, it just suggests you go onto the next place, and the next, and the next...

Get up late? Check.
Argue on-line? Check.
Waste time on WoW? Check.
Sit around in the sun? Check.
Read a bit? Check.

You'd never guess I was procrastinating.

Ok, ok, I'll do my accounts.

Awake, against all the laws of god and man

0100: Go to bed. Set alarm for 0615. Taxi booked for 0700.
0130: Begin worrying that 0700 taxi is too late if I'm getting 0810 flight.
0230: Still not asleep
0300: Yay! Sleep
0400: Phone rings. Accidentally hang up instead of answer it.
0410: In trying to get to voicemail, discover I've never actually set up voicemail properly. End up recording greeting message while both half-asleep and trying to quiet as possible.
0420: Get to message. It's from the taxi, complaining that I wasn't there.
0421: Ring taxi, pointing out politely that booking was not for four AM. Argue with taxi driver. He eventually agrees to pick me up again. Asks me what time. 0615 says I.
0425: Realise that I've just rebooked the taxi for the time I was planning on WAKING UP, not the original taxi time. Curses. Consider rebooking taxi. Realise that I'm still not coherent enough to explain to taxi controller. Reset alarm, roll over. Sleep will come soon, right?

Right?

No.

My head is killing me.
And by this, I do not mean
That it has knives, or guns, or bombs.

No, it is my nose,
Sneezing and streaming
And sneezing some more, without cease.

I can take no more.
Who would have thought that
My nose could be so Machiavellian.

We just spend half the afternoon talking about how we all want to do new things - travel, do courses, expand our horizons and so forth, then spent the second half looking up the theme music to 80s cartoons on youtube.

This is wonderfully emblematic of the now, somehow.

Around three AM, while reading a biography of Bartholemew Roberts, I worked out how to do the crew combat system for the RuneQuest Pirates game I'm working on. It fell into my head as a big single entity, so my brain is now very full of numbers and rules. Around four, I realised that my idea could be extended to simplify a lot of ship to ship stuff, while still working with the 'Elite meets the Caribbean' structure of the game.

Doing a semi-historical pirates game is remarkably easy when Skull & Bones exists. I'm trying to avoid lifting material directly, but it's too good a reference book.

Oh, and I am old now. 29 since last thursday. Boo. Screw you, entropy.

Discovering your credit card has gone missing is exactly the wrong way to start Christmas dinner. (All cancelled promptly, which of course means I'll find it in a pocket tomorrow morning.)

Bonus Christmas Quiz! Match the gift to the relative:
1. Aunt A
2. Aunt B
3. Weird Uncle.

A. Shirt.
B. The Nurenberg Interviews.
C. Book Token.

Scene: A Coffee Shop. Me, working away on the giant laptop of doom.
Waitress: Excuse me?
Me: Er...yes?
Waitress: You know everything about computers?
Me: Well, not quite. What's the problem?
Waitress: I want to buy a laptop.
Me: What do you need it for? Just email and the internet, or writing, or playing DVDs or-
Waitress: World of Warcraft.

In other news, I have a remote control Dalek. Tremble before me!

In other, other news this book is hell and I have a cold and I want to die or even better stop writing this book but I still have 16 pages to go agh.
